When is trench shoring required?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA, requires that trenches that are 5 feet deep or greater have a protective system, like hydraulic shoring systems. OSHA requires that trenches 20 feet deep or greater need a protective system designed or approved by a registered professional engineer (RPE). How can we best keep workers safe from cave-ins?

United Rentals offers a variety of trench safety rentals designed to withstand a cave-in and ensure worker safety in jobsite trenching applications. Manhole shields, shielding and arch spreaders are types of trench safety equipment designed to keep workers safe from cave-ins. Consult with a United Rentals registered professional engineer (RPE) for an engineered system for your specific jobsite.

What is a permit-required confined space?

OSHA defines a permit-required confined space, also known as a PRCS, as one that has one or more of the following characteristics: a hazardous atmosphere, contains materials with the potential to engulf someone, has an internal structure that could entrap or asphyxiate a person or if the space presents any other recognized serious safety or health hazards. OSHA requires that a permit for a PCRS must be posted at all entrances and available to personnel entering the space. What types of tests should be performed on manholes and pipes?

Manhole and pipe testing is important to ensure acceptance, integrity and functionality early on, before they possibly worsen. Common tests include air testing, vacuum testing, smoke testing, infiltration or exfiltration testing, mandrel testing and hydrostatic testing to assess and ensure the safety, structural stability and integrity of manholes and pipe systems.
